A large wildfire has broken out in the Peak District, with emergency crews working through difficult conditions to contain a fast-moving blaze affecting moorland near Snake Pass. The fire has produced a significant smoke plume visible across parts of Derbyshire and Greater Manchester.
According to Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, the affected area is estimated to be approximately 1,200 metres by 600 metres. Firefighters confirmed that multiple agencies have been deployed to the scene as they attempt to bring the situation under control in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
Crews from Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire have all been involved in the response, working alongside partners from the Peak District Fire Operations Group. This includes local gamekeepers, landowners, and teams from the Derby Mountain Rescue Team, who have supported containment and access efforts in remote moorland areas.
Officials have warned that dry vegetation, combined with moderate winds, is accelerating the spread of the fire. The blaze has been described as moving rapidly across the moorland, with conditions expected to remain challenging due to ongoing dry weather.
Residents in nearby areas, including Glossop, have reported visible smoke, prompting reassurance from fire services that the plume is a direct result of the moorland fire. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and report any additional signs of fire activity.
Local moorland groups have also highlighted the severity of current conditions. Gamekeepers involved in the response reported working through the night to contain the flames, with some remaining on scene continuously while others returned in the morning to continue efforts. Officials also noted a high number of recent wildfire-related incidents linked to open flames and outdoor activity in vulnerable moorland areas.
The wildfire risk level, as assessed by the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation, has been raised to “red” for moorland regions across England and Wales, reflecting extremely high fire danger conditions.
